The Story Begins with a Promise

More Than a List of Names
Many people begin reading the Gospel of Matthew only to find a long genealogy. It’s tempting to skim over the names and move on to the “important” parts of the story. Yet Matthew 1:1 contains a powerful truth that sets the stage for everything that follows.In one verse, Matthew introduces Jesus as both the Son of David and the Son of Abraham. These titles aren’t random details—they point to God’s faithfulness across generations.This verse reminds us that God always keeps His promises.The Son of AbrahamGod promised Abraham that through his descendants, all nations of the earth would be blessed. For centuries, people waited for that promise to be fulfilled.Jesus is the fulfillment of that promise.Through Christ, salvation became available to every nation, every tribe, every language, and every person who places their faith in Him. God’s plan was never limited to one group of people. His heart has always been to redeem the world.The Son of DavidGod also made a promise to King David that one of his descendants would reign forever.Earthly kingdoms rise and fall. Leaders come and go. But Jesus is the eternal King whose kingdom will never end.Matthew wanted his readers to understand from the very first verse that Jesus is the promised Messiah—the King they had been waiting for.A Story of GraceAs you continue reading Matthew’s genealogy, you’ll discover something remarkable. The family line of Jesus includes people with complicated stories, failures, mistakes, and brokenness.There are outsiders, sinners, and people whose lives were far from perfect.Yet God chose to include them in His redemption story.What an encouraging reminder for us today! God is not looking for perfect people. He works through imperfect people who are willing to trust Him.Your past does not disqualify you from God’s purposes.God’s Faithfulness Through the GenerationsMatthew 1:1 is a testimony to God’s unwavering faithfulness. Generation after generation passed, kingdoms changed, and circumstances shifted, but God’s promises remained secure.What God promised Abraham, He fulfilled.What God promised David, He fulfilled.And what God promises us through Christ, He will fulfill as well.When life feels uncertain, we can rest in the certainty of God’s character. He is faithful yesterday, today, and forever.

What promise of God do you need to trust today, even if you haven’t seen its fulfillment yet?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God who keeps His promises. Help me trust You when I cannot see the whole picture. Remind me that Your plans are unfolding even when I don’t understand them. Thank You for sending Jesus, the promised Messiah, and for including people like me in Your story of redemption. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
