When Jesus Speaks: Matthew 5:2
“And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying…” — Matthew 5:2 (KJV)
Matthew 5:2 may seem like a simple introduction, but it marks the beginning of one of the most important teachings in the Bible. Jesus had gone up on a mountainside, His disciples had gathered around Him, and the crowds were listening. Then Jesus began to teach.
The words that followed would become known as the Sermon on the Mount.
Jesus Is Our TeacherJesus did more than perform miracles and heal the sick. He taught people how to know God and live according to His will.
When Jesus spoke, He addressed matters of the heart. He taught about humility, mercy, forgiveness, prayer, worry, love, and faithfulness. He did not simply give people more religious rules. He showed them what a life transformed by God looks like.
We often look in many places for guidance. We listen to friends, social media, television, and our own feelings. Although some of those voices may offer helpful advice, none of them has the wisdom and authority of Jesus.
If we want to know how God desires us to live, we must listen to His Son.
Come Close and ListenBefore Jesus began teaching, His disciples came to Him. They placed themselves near enough to hear His words.
That is still an important lesson for us today. We cannot physically sit beside Jesus on a mountainside, but we can draw close to Him through Scripture, prayer, and quiet reflection. We can approach His Word with a willing heart and ask Him to help us understand.
Reading the Bible should be more than completing a daily task. It is an opportunity to sit at the feet of Jesus and allow His truth to shape us.
The question is not only, “What did Jesus say?” We must also ask, “Am I willing to follow what He teaches?”
His Words Still Speak Today
Jesus spoke the Sermon on the Mount many centuries ago, but His message remains relevant. Our world still needs mercy. People still need comfort. Hearts still need purity. Enemies still need to be loved, and anxious people still need to learn how to trust God.
The teachings of Jesus challenge the values of the world. The world tells us to put ourselves first, but Jesus teaches humility. The world encourages revenge, but Jesus teaches forgiveness. The world focuses on outward appearances, but Jesus looks at the heart.
His words may challenge us, but they also lead us toward peace, freedom, and a closer relationship with God.
A Heart Ready to LearnListening to Jesus requires humility. We must be willing to admit that we do not have all the answers and that some areas of our lives need to change.
Jesus does not teach us to condemn us. He teaches us because He loves us. His words reveal the path to a life centered on God.
As we begin studying the Sermon on the Mount, let us approach it with open hearts. May we listen carefully, receive His truth, and allow His teaching to influence our thoughts, choices, and relationships.

Are you making time to listen to Jesus? Is there an area of your life in which you need His wisdom today?Open your Bible with the expectation that God will speak through His Word. Then ask for the faith and courage to live according to what you learn.

Dear Jesus, thank You for being my teacher. Quiet the distractions around me and help me listen carefully to Your words. Give me an open and humble heart that is willing to learn and change. Help me not only to hear Your teaching but also to put it into practice. Guide my thoughts, decisions, and actions so that my life reflects You. In Your name, amen.
