Matthew 5:3 begins the Beatitudes—a series of teachings in which Jesus describes the attitudes and qualities that characterize those who belong to God’s kingdom. His first statement may sound surprising. Why would someone who is “poor in spirit” be considered blessed?

Being poor in spirit does not mean believing that we are worthless or unimportant. It means recognizing our spiritual need for God. It is admitting that we cannot save ourselves, overcome sin through our own strength, or live the life God desires without His help.

The world often tells us to be independent, self-reliant, and confident in our own abilities. Jesus teaches something different: true blessing begins with humility.

A person who is poor in spirit comes before God with empty hands and says, “Lord, I need You.” Instead of trusting in personal achievements, good deeds, money, or status, that person depends completely on God’s mercy and grace.

This kind of humility opens the door to the kingdom of heaven. Before we can receive salvation, we must understand that we need a Savior. Before God can fill us, we must recognize that we are empty without Him.

There may be moments when we feel weak, inadequate, or spiritually exhausted. Those feelings do not necessarily mean that God is far away. They can become opportunities to draw closer to Him. When we stop pretending that we have everything under control, we make room for God to work in our hearts.

We do not have to impress God. We can approach Him honestly—with our struggles, failures, questions, and needs. His grace is available to everyone who humbly turns to Him.

Today, remember that needing God is not a weakness. It is the beginning of true spiritual strength. Those who recognize their need for Him will discover the riches of His grace and the promise of His kingdom.

Are there areas of your life that you have been trying to handle without God? What would it look like to surrender those areas to Him today?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I recognize that I need You. Forgive me for the times I have depended only on myself. Help me remain humble and trust in Your mercy, wisdom, and strength. Fill the empty places in my heart and guide me as I follow You. Thank You for welcoming me into Your kingdom through Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
