God’s Light Reaches the Forgotten Places
Matthew 4:15
«“The land of Zebulun, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.” — Matthew 4:15 (KJV)»
At first glance, Matthew 4:15 may seem like little more than a list of locations. Zebulun. Naphtali. The way of the sea. Beyond Jordan. Galilee of the Gentiles.
It would be easy to read quickly and move on.
But these places matter.
Matthew is pointing us back to a prophecy from Isaiah. Jesus had begun His ministry in Galilee, and His presence there was not accidental. Hundreds of years earlier, God had spoken about this very region.
And there is something beautiful hidden in these geographical details:Jesus went where the light was desperately needed.
A Place Others Might OverlookGalilee was not necessarily the place people would have expected the Messiah to begin His public ministry.
It was removed from the religious center of Jerusalem and had a significant Gentile influence. Yet this was exactly where Jesus chose to begin proclaiming:“Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” — Matthew 4:17
God did not reserve His light only for the important, powerful, respected, or religious.
Jesus went toward ordinary people.
He went toward people living far from the center of religious life.
He went toward those who needed hope.
That tells us something important about the heart of God.
No place is too insignificant for Jesus to enter.
And neither is any person.
God Has Not Forgotten Where You Are
Sometimes we can feel like we’re living in our own version of an overlooked place.
Maybe life hasn’t turned out the way we expected.
Maybe we’re carrying regret.
Maybe we’re struggling financially.
Maybe we’re lonely.
Maybe we’re trying to find our way back to God.
Maybe we’re wondering whether God even notices what we’re going through.
Matthew 4:15 reminds us that Jesus knows exactly where to find people.
You don’t have to somehow make your way into the perfect spiritual condition before He will come near.Jesus walked into Galilee.
He entered ordinary towns.
He met fishermen beside the water.
He stepped into people’s homes.
He touched the sick.
He spoke with sinners.
He called ordinary people to follow Him.
And He still meets people in ordinary places today.
Your Location Doesn’t Limit God’s Purpose
The names Zebulun and Naphtali also remind us of something else.God’s promises can stretch across generations.
Isaiah had spoken about this region long before Jesus arrived there. People living in Galilee may not have realized that their ordinary towns were standing in the middle of a prophecy being fulfilled.
Imagine that.
They were going about their everyday lives while God’s plan was unfolding around them.
Sometimes we don’t recognize what God is doing while we’re living through it either.
We see an ordinary Tuesday.
God may see preparation.We see a closed door.
God may see redirection.
We see waiting.God may see growth.
We see a forgotten place.
God may see exactly where His light is about to shine.
Jesus Goes Toward the Darkness
The next verse makes the meaning even clearer:«“The people which sat in darkness saw great light…” — Matthew 4:16»
Matthew 4:15 tells us where.
Matthew 4:16 tells us why.
Jesus came bringing light.And light doesn’t avoid darkness.
Light enters it.That’s the hope of the gospel.
Jesus didn’t wait for humanity to become good enough to reach Him.
He came to us.
He entered a broken world.
He walked among sinners.
And ultimately, He went to the cross so that our sins could be forgiven and we could be reconciled to God.
Maybe there are dark places in your life right now.
Don’t assume darkness means God has abandoned you.
The story of Jesus tells us something very different.
Darkness may be exactly where His light becomes easiest to see.
A Thought for Today
Matthew 4:15 may look like a verse about geography, but underneath those place names is a reminder of God’s incredible faithfulness.
God knew where Jesus would go.
God knew whom He would reach.
God knew when the light would come.
And God knows where you are too.
You may feel overlooked by the world.
You may feel like you’re standing far away from where important things happen.
You may even feel far away from God.
But distance has never stopped Jesus.
He knows the road to where you are.
And sometimes the places we think have been forgotten become the very places where His light shines brightest.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,Thank You for reminding me that no person and no place is beyond Your reach. When I feel forgotten, help me remember that You know exactly where I am.Bring the light of Jesus into the places in my life that feel dark, uncertain, or hopeless. Help me trust Your plan even when I cannot see what You are doing.And Lord, help me carry Your light to people who may feel overlooked or forgotten. Let my words, actions, and love point them toward Jesus.Thank You for coming to find us instead of waiting for us to find our own way to You.In Jesus’ name,Amen.
