Fulfilling All Righteousness
Scripture: “But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.’ Then John consented.” — Matthew 3:15 (NIV)
John the Baptist was confused. He knew who Jesus was. He knew Jesus had no sin to confess and no need to be baptized. In fact, John felt unworthy, saying that he needed to be baptized by Jesus instead.
Yet Jesus replied with words that reveal His heart: “Let it be so now… it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.”Jesus wasn’t baptized because He needed cleansing. He was baptized because He came to fully obey the Father’s will. From the very beginning of His public ministry, Jesus demonstrated perfect obedience. He willingly identified with the very people He had come to save. Though sinless, He stepped into the waters alongside sinners, foreshadowing the day He would take their sins upon Himself at the cross.
What a beautiful picture of humility.
The King of kings did not demand special treatment. He didn’t stand above humanity; He entered into our brokenness. His baptism reminds us that true greatness is found in humble obedience to God.
Many times we hesitate to obey because we don’t fully understand why God is asking us to do something. We wait until it makes sense. Jesus teaches us a different way. Obedience comes first. Understanding often follows.
Perhaps God is asking you to forgive someone who hurt you, to serve quietly without recognition, to step into a new calling, or simply to trust Him in a difficult season. Like Jesus, we are called to obey the Father, even when the path isn’t easy or fully explained.
Every act of obedience draws us closer to the heart of God.
Reflection
Is there an area of your life where you’ve been delaying obedience because it doesn’t make sense? Ask God for the faith to trust His wisdom above your own. His plans are always righteous, and His ways are always good.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the perfect example of Jesus. Thank You that He chose humility and complete obedience to Your will. Help me to follow His example by trusting You even when I don’t understand Your plans. Give me a willing heart that says “yes” to whatever You ask. May my life bring glory to You through faithful obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
