Matthew 2:7 — The Danger of Hidden Motives
“Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.” — Matthew 2:7
Not every question is asked with a sincere heart.In Matthew 2:7, King Herod secretly meets with the Magi. On the surface, it appears he simply wants information about the promised Messiah. But beneath his calm words was a heart filled with fear, pride, and a desire to protect his own power. He wasn’t seeking Jesus so he could worship Him—he was seeking Him so he could eliminate what he saw as a threat.This verse reminds us that God sees beyond appearances. We may be able to hide our motives from other people, but nothing is hidden from Him. He knows the intentions behind every word, every action, and every decision.It’s easy to read about Herod and shake our heads, but this passage also invites us to examine our own hearts. Why do we pursue God? Do we seek Him because we love Him, or only when we want something? Do we surrender to His will, or do we try to keep control of our own kingdoms?The wonderful news is that God doesn’t reject those who come to Him honestly. Even when our motives are mixed or our hearts need refining, He lovingly calls us to repentance and transforms us from the inside out. He desires genuine relationship, not empty appearances.Today, ask God to search your heart. Invite Him to reveal anything that stands between you and a wholehearted devotion to Christ. The Lord isn’t looking for perfection—He’s looking for honesty and a heart willing to be changed.

When you come to God in prayer, are you seeking His presence above all else, or are you holding tightly to your own plans?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for knowing my heart completely. Search me and reveal any selfish motives or hidden fears that keep me from fully trusting You. Give me a sincere desire to seek Jesus above everything else, and help me surrender every part of my life to Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
