Called Out of Egypt: God Leads Us Into Freedom
Matthew 2:15
“…And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘Out of Egypt I called my Son.’” — Matthew 2:15 (NIV)
At first glance, Matthew 2:15 may seem like a simple historical detail. Joseph, Mary, and the young Jesus fled to Egypt to escape King Herod’s murderous plan. They remained there until Herod died, and then God called them home. But this verse carries a much deeper message about God’s faithfulness and His plan of redemption.
Matthew points back to Hosea 11:1, where God says, “Out of Egypt I called my son.” Originally, Hosea was speaking about the nation of Israel being delivered from slavery. Matthew shows us that Jesus fulfills that story in a greater way. Just as Israel came out of Egypt, Jesus came out of Egypt—not only to fulfill prophecy but to become the Savior who would lead all people out of the slavery of sin.
There are times in our lives when we find ourselves in our own “Egypt.” It may be a season of fear, grief, uncertainty, addiction, broken relationships, or spiritual dryness. These places are uncomfortable, and often we long to escape them immediately. Yet even in those seasons, God is present. He has not forgotten us.
Jesus’ time in Egypt reminds us that God sometimes leads us into places of protection before leading us into places of purpose. Egypt was never Jesus’ final destination. It was simply a temporary stop in God’s perfect plan.The same is true for us. Whatever “Egypt” you are facing today does not have the final word. God knows exactly where you are, and when the time is right, He will call you forward. His timing is perfect, even when we don’t understand it.
If you feel like you’ve been waiting for too long, remember this: God doesn’t abandon His children in Egypt. He calls them out when His purpose has been accomplished.
Reflection
Are you in an “Egypt” season today? Instead of asking, “Why am I here?” ask, “Lord, what are You teaching me while I’m here?” Trust that the same God who called His Son out of Egypt is still calling His people into freedom, hope, and new beginnings.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness even in the seasons that feel uncertain and difficult. Help me trust that You are working behind the scenes, even when I cannot see it. Give me patience to wait on Your timing and courage to follow wherever You lead. Thank You for sending Jesus, who fulfilled every promise and made a way for me to walk in freedom. Call me out of every place that keeps me from You and lead me into the life You have prepared for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
