Obedience Before Understanding
Matthew 2:13
“Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.’” — Matthew 2:13 (ESV)
What do you do when God’s plan suddenly changes your own?
Joseph probably expected life to settle down after Jesus’ birth. The visitors had come and gone, and perhaps it seemed that the most difficult part was behind them. Instead, in the middle of the night, God interrupted his plans with an urgent command: “Get up. Take the child and His mother. Run.”There was no long explanation. No detailed itinerary. No guarantee of when they would return. There was only one instruction: obey now.
Joseph’s response is remarkable because he didn’t argue, delay, or negotiate. He trusted that if God was leading him away from home, then God would also provide for him along the journey.
How often do we want the entire roadmap before we’re willing to take the first step? We ask questions like, Why is this happening? How long will this last? What if it doesn’t work out? Yet God often asks us to trust Him one step at a time.
Sometimes obedience means leaving what is familiar. It may mean walking away from comfort, changing directions, or stepping into uncertainty. While we may not understand the reason in the moment, God always sees what we cannot. He knew the danger Joseph couldn’t yet see. His warning wasn’t meant to create fear—it was meant to provide protection.
The same God who guided Joseph still guides His children today. He may not reveal every detail of the journey, but He promises His presence every step of the way.When God calls you to move, don’t let fear keep you standing still. His plans are always wiser than ours, and His protection often comes through our willingness to obey.

Prayer
Father, thank You for seeing what I cannot see. Help me trust Your guidance, even when I don’t understand the destination. Give me a heart like Joseph’s—quick to obey, confident in Your care, and willing to follow wherever You lead. Remind me that Your plans are always for my good and Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
