What Does True Righteousness Look Like?
When we think of righteousness, we often picture someone who follows every rule perfectly. But Matthew 1:19 gives us a beautiful picture of what true godliness looks like.Joseph had every reason to believe Mary had been unfaithful. He didn’t yet know the miraculous truth that she was carrying the Son of God. From his perspective, his heart was undoubtedly broken, his future seemed shattered, and his trust had been betrayed.Yet Scripture describes Joseph as a just man.How did he demonstrate that justice?Not by seeking revenge.Not by humiliating Mary.Not by making her suffer for what he believed had happened.Instead, Joseph chose compassion. He decided to end the engagement quietly, protecting Mary’s dignity even while carrying his own pain.What an incredible example of grace.In a world that often celebrates public outrage and quick judgment, Joseph reminds us that righteousness is not merely about being right—it’s about reflecting the heart of God.Mercy doesn’t ignore truth, but it never delights in another person’s shame.As followers of Christ, we’re called to be people who extend grace, protect others’ dignity, and respond with humility even when we’ve been hurt.Joseph’s story also teaches us an important lesson: sometimes we don’t have the whole story.Before God revealed His plan, Joseph made his decision based on the information he had. Thankfully, he didn’t act rashly or out of anger. His gentle spirit left room for God to speak.How often would our relationships improve if we paused before reacting?
Life Application
Before you assume the worst about someone, remember that you may not know the full story. Ask yourself whether your response reflects God’s mercy as much as His truth.Being a follower of Christ means showing grace, even when it’s difficult.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,Thank You for Joseph’s example of humility, kindness, and compassion. Help me to respond with mercy instead of judgment and with gentleness instead of anger. Guard my heart from making quick assumptions about others. Teach me to reflect Your love by extending grace, protecting people’s dignity, and trusting You with situations I don’t fully understand. May my life point others to the mercy You have shown me through Jesus Christ.In Jesus’ name, Amen.
