Matthew 1:20 – When God Speaks, Fear Gives Way to Faith
Scripture:”But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.’” — Matthew 1:20 (NKJV)
God Meets Us in Our Moments of Uncertainty
Joseph was carrying a heavy burden.His future had been turned upside down. The woman he loved was pregnant, and he couldn’t make sense of what had happened. He had already decided to quietly end their engagement, believing it was the most compassionate thing to do.But notice what Matthew tells us: “While he thought about these things…”Joseph didn’t react impulsively. He paused. He reflected. And in that moment of honest wrestling, God stepped in.The angel’s first words were, “Do not be afraid.”How often does fear keep us from obeying God?We fear what others will think.We fear making the wrong decision.We fear the unknown.Yet throughout Scripture, God repeatedly tells His people, “Do not be afraid.” Not because life will be easy, but because He is present.The angel revealed something Joseph could never have discovered on his own: this pregnancy was part of God’s divine plan. What looked like a tragedy was actually the beginning of humanity’s salvation.Sometimes we don’t have enough information to understand what God is doing. We see only the confusion, while God sees the completed masterpiece.Our responsibility isn’t to know everything—it’s to trust the One who does.
Listen Before You Act
Joseph’s example teaches us the importance of waiting on God before making life-changing decisions.He didn’t allow his emotions to dictate his actions. Instead, he remained open to God’s direction.When we’re facing uncertainty, prayer should come before panic. Seeking God’s wisdom should come before rushing ahead.God still speaks today through His Word, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, wise counsel, and the peace that comes from walking in obedience.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,Thank You for meeting me in my moments of uncertainty. When fear tries to control my decisions, remind me that You are faithful and Your plans are always good. Give me a heart that pauses to seek Your wisdom before acting. Help me trust You even when I can’t see the whole picture. Strengthen my faith to obey Your voice over my fears, knowing that You are always working for Your glory and my good.In Jesus’ name, Amen.
