When We Feel Unworthy
Matthew 3:14
“But John tried to prevent Him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by You, and yet You come to me?’” — Matthew 3:14 (NKJV)
John the Baptist understood who Jesus was. He recognized that standing before him was not just another person seeking baptism, but the spotless Son of God. Overwhelmed by Christ’s holiness, John immediately objected. His words reveal deep humility: “I need to be baptized by You.”
John’s response is one many of us can relate to. When we truly see Jesus for who He is, we become painfully aware of our own shortcomings. We realize we don’t deserve His attention, His grace, or His love. Like John, we feel unworthy.
The beautiful truth of the gospel is that Jesus comes anyway.
Jesus wasn’t baptized because He needed forgiveness. He came to identify with sinful humanity and to begin the mission that would ultimately lead Him to the cross. Even though John felt unworthy to serve Him, Jesus invited John to take part in God’s plan.
God often uses people who feel inadequate. Moses doubted his ability to speak. Gideon questioned his strength. Peter knew his failures. John felt unworthy to baptize the Messiah. Yet God chose each of them, not because they were perfect, but because they were willing to obey.
Humility is not thinking less of God’s calling on your life. It is recognizing that whatever God asks you to do, He will also equip you to accomplish. Our feelings of inadequacy should never become excuses for disobedience.
Perhaps today you’re thinking, “God couldn’t use someone like me.” Maybe your past weighs heavily on you, or you feel unqualified because of your mistakes. Remember John’s example. He acknowledged his unworthiness, yet he obeyed Jesus when Jesus instructed him.
God has never looked for perfect people. He looks for surrendered hearts.
The Savior who came to John also comes to us. He doesn’t wait until we’ve earned His favor. He meets us in our weakness, covers us with His grace, and invites us to participate in His work.
Don’t let feelings of unworthiness keep you from what God is calling you to do. Let humility draw you closer to Christ, not farther away. His grace has always been greater than your inadequacy.

Is there an area of your life where feelings of unworthiness are keeping you from obeying God’s call? What step of faith is Jesus asking you to take today?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me even though I am unworthy. Help me to walk in humility without allowing insecurity to keep me from obeying You. Give me the courage to trust that Your grace is enough and that You will equip me for every calling You place before me. May my life point others to Jesus, just as John’s did. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
