The Ax Is at the Root
John the Baptist doesn’t soften his words in Matthew 3:10. Instead, he paints a powerful picture: an ax resting at the root of a tree, ready to strike. This isn’t a warning about trimming a few unhealthy branches—it’s a warning about the entire tree. God isn’t merely interested in outward appearances; He is concerned with the condition of our hearts.
A healthy tree naturally produces healthy fruit. In the same way, a life transformed by Christ will begin to show evidence of that transformation. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, and obedience don’t earn God’s favor—they reveal that His Spirit is at work within us.
John’s audience included many religious people who believed their heritage made them right with God. But John reminded them that religious activity without genuine repentance is fruitless. The same warning applies today. Going to church, knowing Bible verses, or calling ourselves Christians means little if our lives never reflect the One we claim to follow.
The image of the ax also reminds us that God’s patience is not endless. He is incredibly merciful, giving people countless opportunities to turn to Him, but there comes a day when each of us will stand before Him. Today is the day to examine our hearts, repent of sin, and trust fully in Christ.
The good news is that Jesus doesn’t just demand fruit—He makes fruit possible. When we surrender our lives to Him, He changes us from the inside out. What once seemed impossible becomes the natural result of abiding in Him.
Instead of asking, “Do I look like a Christian?” perhaps the better question is, “Is my life producing the fruit that only Jesus can grow?”

If someone looked at your life today, what fruit would they see? Would they see evidence of God’s transforming work, or only the appearance of religion?
Prayer
Father, search my heart and reveal anything that keeps me from fully following You. Help me not to settle for outward religion but to experience true repentance and lasting transformation. Produce in me the fruit that honors You, and let my life point others to Jesus. Amen.
