A Voice in the Wilderness
Matthew 3:3
“This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: ‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.”‘” — Matthew 3:3
Before a king would travel in ancient times, messengers were sent ahead to prepare the roads. Obstacles were removed, rough places were smoothed, and people were alerted that the king was coming. John the Baptist had that very mission—but not for an earthly ruler. He came to prepare hearts for the arrival of the King of Kings.
John’s message was simple yet powerful: Prepare the way for the Lord. His call wasn’t about fixing roads; it was about removing the barriers that keep us from fully knowing God. Pride, bitterness, unconfessed sin, fear, and self-reliance can all become obstacles that keep our hearts from being fully open to Christ.
The wilderness is also significant. God often meets people in quiet, lonely, and unexpected places. The wilderness can represent seasons of waiting, hardship, or uncertainty. Yet it is often there that God’s voice becomes clearest. When distractions fade, His invitation becomes impossible to ignore.
The same call echoes today. Jesus has already come, but He still desires to reign in every corner of our lives. Preparing the way means surrendering our plans, trusting His direction, and allowing Him to reshape us into His image. It means making the crooked places in our hearts straight through repentance and obedience.
God isn’t looking for perfect people. He’s looking for willing hearts that will respond when He calls.

Prayer
Lord, prepare my heart for Your presence. Show me anything that is keeping me from walking closely with You. Remove pride, fear, and anything else that stands in the way. Help me hear Your voice, even in the wilderness seasons of life, and give me the courage to follow wherever You lead. Amen.
